    James J. Girmus was born April 13, 1883 near Milligan, Nebr. He died at the General Hospital in Geneva on Friday morning, March 26, 1943, at the age of 59 years, 11 months, and 19 days.

    October 29, 1907, he was married to Anna Matejka. To this union twelve children were born, Joe is in the Army overseas, Emil, Jim, Mrs. Ervin Odvody; Mrs Hubert Koehn, Ed, Frank, Bill, and the rest at home*. five grandchildren, and one sister, Mrs. Albert Simacek, also survive. His brothers, Frank and Emil, preceded him in death.

    He has farmed all his life in Fillmore County, except five years in Wyoming where he took up a homestead.

    James and Anna spent all of their lives farming in Nebraska except for a few early years in their marriage when they were homesteading in Chugwater, Wyoming. They had twelve children: Edward, Frank, William, James, Mildred who married Ervin Odvody, Emil, Joe, John, Helen who married Hubert Koehn, Rudolph, Raymond, and Adolph. (Milligan, p 277).

    Notes:

    He attended rural school #85 in Saline County. As a young man, he earned his living by working on threshing crews and corn shelling crews. During the harvest time, the hired men slept in a hayloft or hay rack. On 5 September 1918, he enlisted in the U.S. Army. He was a private in the Model Machine Gun Company A, 163rd Battalion and was stationed at Camp Hancoda in Georgia. During basic training, he contracted the influenza that was sieging the country, and was unable to embark overseas with this company. He received an honorable discharge at Camp Dodge, Iowa on February 28, 1919. After his discharge, he engaged in farming west of Geneva. Anton worked with horses, and had many scars that resulted when he was breaking the young colts. He was in a threshing crew with the Spicka brothers, Joseph Herynk and Ed Kuss. To supplement the farm income during the depression, he used his team of horses to help with WPA road construction in Saline County (Milligan, pp 265-266).

    Anton married Mary Paroubek on 19 Jan 1926 in Geneva, Fillmore County, Nebraska. Mary was born on 22 Aug 1908 in Plzen, Bohemia; died on 25 Jul 1996 in Geneva, Fillmore County, Nebraska; was buried on 29 Jul 1996 in Bohemian Brethren Cemetery (AKA Cesky Bratri Cemetery), Fillmore County, Nebraska.     Notes:

    Daughter of Mike Paroubek and Marie Korensky. Mary and her mother embarked on their transatlantic journey, to join Mary's father Mike who had previously emigrated, from Breman, Germany aboard the Loyd. They were processed through Ellis Island, and journeyed by train to the Vencil Ruzicka farm. Mary attended rural school district #85 in Saline County, graduating from the Milligan Schools. (Milligan, p 266).


    Elznic- Mary, 87, Milligan, died Thursday (7/25/96) in Geneva. Survivors: son, Larry, Geneva; daughters, Lenoris Girmus, Ohiowa, Loren Buzek, Exeter; sister, Emilye Girmus, Friend; 11 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; 2 great-great-grandchildren.

    Also known as Bohumil.

    The son of Barbara BARTOS and Joseph GIRMUS, Gottlieb was born in Prague, Bohemia in 1847, and immigrated to the United States in 1851 with his (father and) brother Joseph. His father remarried Katharine WAGWADUKE and had eleven additional children. The family lived in New York, and later moved to Newark, New Jersey. Gottlieb worked as a machine shop operator. The Girmus family later settled in Saginaw, Michigan. Here Gottlieb enlisted in the 16th Regiment, Company D, Michigan on March 24, 1864. He was described as being small in stature, five feet one inch tall, with a fair complexion, blue eyes, light hair, occupation laborer. He served for approximately 11 months, but became ill in March and April 1865 and was mustered out of the service due to his health. He was discharged in May 1865.

    Gottlieb moved to Nebraska in 1868, and filed a homestead claim at the Beatrice Land Office on April 26, 1869. His land was approximately 150 acres in Section 34 of Liberty Township in Fillmore County.

    Gottlieb was apparently industrious and entrepreneurial in spirit. The local paper noted he built to town coal shed, served as assessor for Glengary Township, purchased a well auger as a joint venture with Vit Laun, and served as village clerk. When he was in his early sixties, he moved to Chugwater, Wyoming to set up a homestead in that state. (Milligan, 276).

    Gottlieb married Katherine Sopr on 14 Oct 1879 in Liberty Township, Fillmore County, Nebraska. Katherine (daughter of Frank Sopr and Veronika Urban) was born on 25 Nov 1853 in Praha, Bohemia; died on 20 Mar 1904; was buried in Bohemian Brethren Cemetery (AKA Cesky Bratri Cemetery), Fillmore County, Nebraska.     AKA Katrina or Mary. The daughter of Veronika URBAN and Frank SOPR, she was born in Prague, Bohemia and came to the United States at the age of 18 with her sister and brother-in-law, Anna and Vaclav KOCA. The sailed on the ship "Ohio" from Bremen, and arrived in Baltimore, Maryland on September 27, 1872. They settled first in Braidwood, Illinois, moving to Glengary Township, Fillmore County, Nebraska in 1874. (Milligan, p 276).
