Earnest C. "Buddy" Felts

Services for Earnest C. "Buddy" Felts, 88, of Hemphill were held at 10 am Tuesday, March 26, 2002 at the Starr Funeral Home chapel in Hemphill with Pastor Sherry Z. Crenshaw and Pastor Fred Raney officiating. Interment followed at Hemphill City Cemetery.

Felts was born June 8, 1913 in Sabine County and died at 2 am Sunday March 24, 2002 in Hemphill.

He was a lifelong resident of Sabine County and a member of the Free Methodist Church. He was a retired truck drive for J.O. Toole.

Survivors: wife, Dorothy Felts of Hemphill; sons and daughters-in-law , Ronnie and Ona Felts of Hemphill, Larry and Frances Felts of Lufkin, and Davis and Connie Felts of Hemphill; daughters and son-in-law, Janie* and Jimmy Emiston of Tyler and Vickie Felts** of Hemphill; a brother, Davis D. "Shay" Felts of Hemphill; sister, Eula Wood of Hemphill; 15 grandchildren; and 29 great-grandchildren.

In White & Toole's, "Sabine County Historical Sketches and Genealogical Records" c. 1972, Davis Felts was not listed as a son of Earnest and Dorothy. However, Earnest's obituary (above) lists "son and daughter-in-law Davis and Connie Felts of Hemphill."

*In White & Toole's, "Sabine County Historical Sketches and Genealogical Records" c. 1972, Carolyn Janie Felts was shown as married to Jimmie Strickland, and as the mother of Jimmy Strickland, Jr. She appears to have been remarried.

** In White & Toole's, "Sabine County Historical Sketches and Genealogical Records" c. 1972, Vicky Juanita Felts is shown as married to Reggie Cordray and as the mother of Todd and Timothy Cordray. She appears to have taken back her maiden name prior to his death.

Earnest married Dorothy Jean Maund. Dorothy (daughter of Harry Mellon Maund and Anna Eltona Bennett) was born on 22 Oct 1923 in Hemphill, Sabine County, Texas; died on 25 Apr 2009 in Hemphill, Sabine County, Texas; was buried in Hemphill City Cemetery, Hemphill, Sabine County, Texas. Dorothy Jean Felts

Dorothy Jean Maund Felts passed from this life to the waiting arms of her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Saturday, April 25, 2009 at her home in Hemphill. She was a beautiful woman with a loving heart and quick wit that played a mean hand of 42. Holidays were a favorite for her, bringing her large extended family together each holiday to make life-long memories; as well as for her famous chicken and dumplings and chocolate pies.

She was active in her community, being a long time member of the James Frederick Gomer chapter of the Daughers of the Republic of Texas, Hemphill Lions Club as well as the American Cancer Society, volunteer and treasurer for United Christian Services and Salvation Army, treasurer for the Hemphill Cemetery, Sunday School teacher and longtime member of First Baptist Church of Hemphill. She retired from First State Bank, Hemphill.

She was preceded in death by the love of her life, Earnest Clifton Felts; daughter, Janie Felts Edmiston; and great-granddaughter, Sarah Elizabeth Felts.

Left to cherish her memory are sisters, Ann McClain of Alto and Mable Sherman of Victoria; son Ronnie Felts and wife Ona of Hemphill; son, Larry Felts and wife Frances of Lufkin; daughter, Vickie Felts of Hemphill; son, Davie Felts and wife Connie of Hemphill; 12 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were conducted Tuesday, April 28 in the Starr Funeral Home Chapel with Bro. Aaron Pardue officiating. Burial follows in the Hemphill City Cemetery.

Services were under the direction of Starr Funeral Home in Hemphill.

A copy of his actual Texas Death Certificate can be viewed online at FamilySearch.org, Texas Deaths, 1890-1976. He was shown as a log contractor, and lifelong resident of Sabine County. He was widowed, and shown as the son of Henry Clay Maund and Patty Emma Goodloe. The informant was Thelma Maund Felts.
