His mother was the widow Caroline Breedlove. She married second James D. French, born ca 1815 in Kentucky. James French was not only Thomas's stepfather, but he had previously been married to the widowed mother of Thomas's wife, Paralee McGrew, making James French her stepfather as well.

Wynema McGrew writes that in the 1860 Robertson County, Texas, census, Thomas's occupation was listed as stock raiser. Thomas and Paralee were the third family listed after their mutual stepfather, James P. French, and his mother, Caroline Breedlove French. Apparently, Paralee's mother, Serena, had died.
