    Notes:

    While living in warehose hollow near Wheeler Dam, Earl contracted malaria fever which forced him back to Limestone to recover. He resided with friends and relatives helping with their crops. In 1933 Earl entered the Civilian Conservation Corps. His grandparents, Samuel and Rebecca Kendall SMITH, needed financial help. The CCC would give Earl food and lodging and $8 a month and send grandparents $22 a month. (The Heritage of Lauderdale County, Alabama, p. 347).

    Earl married Vona Ailene Kennedy on 13 Apr 1935 in Elgin, Lauderdale County, Alabama. Vona was born after 1915; died about 1945. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

    Notes:

    The daughter of Willis Pinkney KENNEDY and Ella Ophelia LOVELL. (The Heritage of Lauderdale County, Alabama, p. 346). Willis was a son of Simpson KENNEDY and Georgiana Pearl LEATHERWOOD, for whom a more complete biography can be found in the same book, pages 291 and 292.

    Earl and Vona had two children Charles Edward McLemore who married Dorothy MATTHIAS and had three girls, Vona, Thresa and DANIELLE.

    Their [Earl and Vona's] other child was Frances Audene McLemore who married James M. CAMPBELL and had one son James Christopher CAMPBELL who married Denise CONWAY and had three girls, Ashley Chrystal, Terri Denise and Mary Caroline CAMPBELL.   1. 4.  Earl Briggs "Early" McLemore was born on 17 Aug 1878 in Limestone County, Alabama (son of John McLemore and Angeline "Nina" M. Halbert); died on 1 Nov 1962.

    Notes:

    He worked paving roads and building bridges when he wasn't farming. The McLemore's remained in Cartwright until 1932. Due to declining cotton prices and other extreme conditions of the Great Depression, Earl's family was forced to move to Elgin, Alabama. The crop of 1931 was a devasting blow to the family. He had planted 20 acres of cotton and produced 4 bales. The cost of production was higher than the income for the product.

    In Elgin, Sammy and Earl Junior began clearing land for William Lee and Risky D. Butler, a prominent family of the period. The Butlers provided work for jobless men to help their families. They employed men lived in tents.

    Notes:

    "John married Angeline Halbert and lived in Limestone County. John was a small man which served him well during the Civil War. One day he was with his Uncle Maclin Bass McLemore in Rogersville. Maclin was a pilot on the Shoals. The Shoals, being a treacherous body of water and rapids, took a skilled person to navigate. That fateful day John and Maclin were captured by the army. Thinking John was too young (he was 15); he was told to go home and tell his aunt what had happened to her husband.

    John in later years carried the Star Route mail in Limestone County. This mail was carried on horseback for which he received $4.00 a month. He lived in Limestone until his death on Valentine Day in 1924 when he literally dropped dead with a heart attack while walking to the store." (The Heritage of Lauderdale County, Alabama, p. 347).
