Daniel Creel notes that on the 1870 census, William's widow and children were living at "Buena Vista PO." There is no Buena Vista in Shelby Co. now but can be presumed to have been there then, likely near Timpson. This is where William Darnell was reported to have died.

William married Mary A. McLemore before 1860. Mary (daughter of William Adkin McLemore and Susan A. Brinson) was born on 23 Jul 1843 in Texas; died on 22 May 1919 in Weatherford, Custer County, Oklahoma. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

In a letter dated 22 October, 1994, Elizabeth Gill wrote:

"My husband's grandmother was a McLemore. She had a brother, John T. born in 1846 in Texas. They lived in Timpson, Shelby Co. Her father was Adkin. This grandmother was widowed after the Civil War. I have a newspaper clipping stating that her husband, William H. DARNELL died in 1866. She had another child (of doubtful parentage) in 1873. Her obituary (1919) states explicitly that Mr. Darnell died in 1873. She later remarried a COOPER and died in Oklahoma."

Diana Noel shows this second spouse as John COOPER, born 1837 in Texas.

Research of my son-in-law's lineage leads to Mary A. McLemore, 7-23-1843 Shelby Co., TX, to 5-22-1919 Weatherford, Custer Co., OK.

She is identified by records as a daughter of W. Adkin McLemore, c1806 GA to 2-16-1881 Shelby Co., TX, and Susan A. Brinson, c1817 GA to bef1870 Shelby Co., TX. She had 4 known siblings - Matthew William, James S., Elizabeth M. [???] and John T. McLemore.

Family oral tradition and photographs identify Native American lineage in Mary and any help would be appreciated with McLemore family history to identify this line.

William married Susan A. Brinson on 23 Oct 1834 in Montgomery County, Alabama. Susan (daughter of Matthew Brinson, Sr. and Henrietta McLemore) was born about 1817 in Georgia; died before 1870 in Shelby County, Texas. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

On the Garrison-Logan Family History and Genealogy website, Susan Brinson was shown as a daughter of Henrietta McLEMORE and Matthew Brinson, said to have been married ca 1811 in Georgia. Matthew was shown as being born in Onslow County, NC and dying in 1861 in Shelby County, Texas.

Email from Mary Mosley Mansour, September 2006, "You have a wonderful site. I believe this man who is one of my grandfathers, Willam McLemore?sup? ?/sup?died ca 1836 in Tallapoosa Co. Alabama. He is listed as a merchant, farmer and intruder on Creek lands at the time." Diane Noel instead shows his location of death as Montgomery County, Alabama.

Melba Gene McLemore notes that the "Alabama Genealogical Register, V. 6, No. 3.4, Sept-Dec 1964 cites a Will for a Wm. McLemore, will dated 7 Aug 1836, probated 12 Sept 1836.

William married Julia Perry. Julia was born on 23 Feb 1784 in Jones County, Georgia; died in in Hancock County, Georgia. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

"History of Shelby County Texas" - Matthew Brinson, an early settler of Shelby County, was born 1789 in Onslow County, North Carolina. He died in 1861 in Shelby County.

Matthew left his brothers in Georgia and moved to Autauga County Alabama where he resided, until his migration to Texas in the late 1830's. He was said to have moved to Texas as a widower, bringing with him two young children and two unmarried daughters.

He was also said to have served in the U.S./Mexican War.

He settled first at Shelbyville on a farm consisting of approximately 1500 acres. This piece of land was the subject of much litigation that continued until settled in 1872 (after Matthew's death).

His son in law, Atkin McLemore was said to have carried on the lawsuit in his name.

Frances Clements Lapp noted that "Matthew moved from Shelbyville to the town of Buena Vista, a thriving community in 1844 and is"buried out in the woods and his grave marked by a red rock, nobody will ever find it."

The Ancestry of Mary Ethel Waller shows Matthew died ca. July 1861 in Shelby County, and is likely buried in an unmarked grave at the Berryman Johnson Cemetery in Rusk County, Texas.

The census listing below shows a Matthew Brinson, close in age to the Matthew Brinson born ca 1789 in North Carolina, but is most likely another Matthew Brinson, as the Matthew Brinson that moved to Shelby county was said to have died in Shelby County around 1861. If that date of death is incorrect, however, it is possible that our Matthew returned to North Carolina to live with relative.
