At the time he completed the application, on December 4, 1936, he was a resident of Abilene, Texas. His home address was 540 Grape Street, and he was employed by Motz & Curtis of Abilene. He listed his parents as John Caro Russel and Annie Elizabeth Gaffney, and his place of birth as St. Louis, Missouri.

John married Lesey Virginia McLemore about 1927. Lesey (daughter of Adkins Pope McLemore and Josephine Craig) was born on 18 Nov 1898 in Haskell, Haskell County, Texas; died on 24 Jan 1994 in Taylor County, Texas. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

According to her application for a Social Security Number, filed October 10, 1963 when she was 64 years old, Lesey was the daughter of Adkins Pope McLemore and Josephine Craig. She was born November 18, 1898 in Haskell, Haskell County, Texas, and at the time of her application was living at 522 Grape, Abilene, Texas.

At the time of the 1880 census, Annie, and her younger sister Elia, were both shown as boarders and pupils at a school in St. Louis, Missouri. Annie was shown as 17, born in Texas, and Elia, F, was shown as 14, also born in Texas. The school was on Cass Avenue and Visitation Convent.

This was likely the Visitation Academy of St. Louis, a private all-girls Roman Catholic High School, established in Kaskaskia, Illinois in 1833, and that moved to St. Louis in 1844.

1862 enlisted in McLemore's Co. F, 4th Tennessee Cavalry. Discharged in 1863 on account of bad health. According to Confederate Soldiers and Patriots of Maury County, Tennessee "He was court martialed by Federals on 3 May 1865 because in Dec. 1864 he and Richard Mackey got 1000 grain sacks from the Carter's Creek Station; he was released."
