Jimmy Hugh Strickland, age 66, died in his home Friday, Feb. 17, 2006 in Pt. Neches. Jimmy Strickland was born on Dec. 22, 1939 in Sabine County, Texas. He has lived in Pt. Neches since 1962 and was owner-operator of S & W Iron Works in Nederland, Texas. He is survived by: one son, Jim Strickland of Pineland, TX; two brothers, Carter of Strickland, Jr., and Ted Strickland both of Hemphill, TX; three sisters, Frances Ferguson of Hemphill, TX, Helen Murray of LaPorte, TX, and Irene McDaniel of Houston, TX; two grandchildren, Justin and Robin Duck. Excerpts from the obituary of Janie Felts Edmiston

Carolyn Jane "Janie" Felts Edmiston, 60, of Flint moved from life on this earth to the joy of Heaven on Wednesday, July 21, 2004. Janie was born March 17, 1944 in Hemphill to E.C. "Buddy" and Dorothy Felts. She was the second of five children. She graduated from Hemphill High School where she was a majorette. She married the love of her life, Jim Edmiston, on Sept. 1, 1973. Together they moved to Flint in 1977 to continue to raise their blended family.

Janie was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother, daughter, sister.....exceptional quilter...gardener....diehard football fan...fisherwoman...Sunday School teacher for many years.....

She was a spitfire with a zest for life that could not be squelched and fought pancreatic cancer with all her faith and will and might.

Preceded in death by her father, E. C. "Buddy" Felts and a son, Tony Edmiston. Survivors, Jim Edmiston, sons Jimmy STRICKLAND, Jr., his wife Bobbie and children Justin and Robin DUCK; Marc Edmiston and children, Michael, Dustin, Alan, Brian and Blake; and a daughter, Anna BEAUDIN and children Justin and Samantha. Also....her mother, Dorothy Jean (Maund) Felts of Hemphill; and siblings, Ronnie Felts and wife Ona Lee of Hemphill; Larry Felts and wife Francis of Lufkin, Vickie Felts of Hemphill, and Dascom "Dave" Felts and wife Connie of Hemphill.

Funeral services were held at County Line Baptist Church on FM 344 West, Lake Palestine....graveside rites at Hemphill City Cemetery. Starr Funeral Home, Inc., Hemphill, Directors.

Earnest C. "Buddy" Felts

Services for Earnest C. "Buddy" Felts, 88, of Hemphill were held at 10 am Tuesday, March 26, 2002 at the Starr Funeral Home chapel in Hemphill with Pastor Sherry Z. Crenshaw and Pastor Fred Raney officiating. Interment followed at Hemphill City Cemetery.

Felts was born June 8, 1913 in Sabine County and died at 2 am Sunday March 24, 2002 in Hemphill.

He was a lifelong resident of Sabine County and a member of the Free Methodist Church. He was a retired truck drive for J.O. Toole.

Survivors: wife, Dorothy Felts of Hemphill; sons and daughters-in-law , Ronnie and Ona Felts of Hemphill, Larry and Frances Felts of Lufkin, and Davis and Connie Felts of Hemphill; daughters and son-in-law, Janie* and Jimmy Emiston of Tyler and Vickie Felts** of Hemphill; a brother, Davis D. "Shay" Felts of Hemphill; sister, Eula Wood of Hemphill; 15 grandchildren; and 29 great-grandchildren.

In White & Toole's, "Sabine County Historical Sketches and Genealogical Records" c. 1972, Davis Felts was not listed as a son of Earnest and Dorothy. However, Earnest's obituary (above) lists "son and daughter-in-law Davis and Connie Felts of Hemphill."

Dorothy Jean Felts

Dorothy Jean Maund Felts passed from this life to the waiting arms of her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Saturday, April 25, 2009 at her home in Hemphill. She was a beautiful woman with a loving heart and quick wit that played a mean hand of 42. Holidays were a favorite for her, bringing her large extended family together each holiday to make life-long memories; as well as for her famous chicken and dumplings and chocolate pies.

She was active in her community, being a long time member of the James Frederick Gomer chapter of the Daughers of the Republic of Texas, Hemphill Lions Club as well as the American Cancer Society, volunteer and treasurer for United Christian Services and Salvation Army, treasurer for the Hemphill Cemetery, Sunday School teacher and longtime member of First Baptist Church of Hemphill. She retired from First State Bank, Hemphill.

She was preceded in death by the love of her life, Earnest Clifton Felts; daughter, Janie Felts Edmiston; and great-granddaughter, Sarah Elizabeth Felts.

Left to cherish her memory are sisters, Ann McClain of Alto and Mable Sherman of Victoria; son Ronnie Felts and wife Ona of Hemphill; son, Larry Felts and wife Frances of Lufkin; daughter, Vickie Felts of Hemphill; son, Davie Felts and wife Connie of Hemphill; 12 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were conducted Tuesday, April 28 in the Starr Funeral Home Chapel with Bro. Aaron Pardue officiating. Burial follows in the Hemphill City Cemetery.

Services were under the direction of Starr Funeral Home in Hemphill.

James married Mary "Mollie"Elizabeth Carter in 1897. Notes:

Called Mollie. At the time of the 1900 Sabine County census, her date of birth was instead shown as August 1879, as was that of her brother, Albert, living with Mollie and James in 1900. It appears they were twins. However other records seem to indicate their year of birth as 1882.

At the time of the 1910 Sabine County Census, they had been shown as married for 11 years, and as the mother of six children, all living.

Married:
Carl Evans also lists a daughter "Abbie" who is not shown on the various census listings for the family. Perhaps she died young.

Their double tombstone at Spring Hill Cemetery reads "Dear parents, though we miss you much we know you rest with God."
