Notes:

James, a 1913 graduate of Milligan High School, enlisted in the Army on October 6, 1917. He served in France, engaging in the battles of Toul, St. Michiel, Meuse, and Argonne. He was attached to Company B, 314 Supply Train, 89th Division. He was honorably discharged on June 12, 1919. After his discharge and marriage, James farmed in Milligan. (Milligan, p 329).

James married Mamie Koca on 21 Jan 1922 in Fillmore County, Nebraska. Mamie (daughter of Albert Koca and Ruzena "Rosie" Simic) was born on 24 Jan 1899 in Ohiowa, Fillmore County, Nebraska; died on 9 Oct 1983 in Geneva, Fillmore County, Nebraska. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

Frank married Agnes Vohnout on 31 Oct 1892 in Fillmore County, Nebraska. Agnes (daughter of George (Jiri) Vohnout and Barbara ???) was born on 21 Jan 1872 in Bohemia; died on 13 Aug 1912 in Fillmore County, Nebraska; was buried in Bohemian National Cemetery (Milligan South), Milligan, Fillmore County, Nebraska. After their marriage, Albert and Rose first lived in the Ohiowa area. They wanted to move back to Milligan, so they purchased the NE 1/4 of Section 8, Glengary Township from Bridget O'Boyle on April 2, 1902. Albert borrowed the money from his parents to do so, witht he stipulation that he pay each of his parents $40 annually. He also was to give his mother 200 pounds of flour a year, but she died two months after her signed the deed. They built a new home on the farm in 1904. After Rose died unexpectedly, Albert retired to town, leaving the farming to his sons. He was in poor health and living in a room of the Milligan Hotel when he committed suicide. He was 73 years old. He was buried near his wife (Milligan, p 335).

Albert married Ruzena "Rosie" Simic on 15 Feb 1898 in Glengary Township, Fillmore County, Nebraska. Ruzena was born on 8 May 1879 in Bohemia; died on 11 Sep 1932 in Glengary Township, Fillmore County, Nebraska; was buried in Bohemian National Cemetery (Milligan South), Milligan, Fillmore County, Nebraska. Notes:

She came to the United States with her family in 1884, settling near Morse Bluff in Saunders County. They moved to Fillmore County in 1901. Ten children were born to her parents, Frantisek SIMIC and Ruzena BURES. Her siblings, as noted in the obituary of her father, were: Frank, John, Emil, Albert, Joseph and Agnes, who later married a McNichols of Carlteon. (Milligan, p 335).

Married:
Albert Koca, 25, and Rosie Simic, age 18, were married February 15, 1898, by Reverand Joseph Bartik at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church. Their witnesses were Frank SOUKUP and Frank MICHALEK. (Milligan, p 335).

Notes:

Came to the United States in 1867*, originally settling in Chicago. They later homesteaded in Fillmore County, Nebraska. His homestead was the W 1/2 SE 1/4 of Section 10, Glengary Township on 17 October 1870, for which he received the patent on 16 May 1878. Josef use to work in Nebraska City and would walk there and back, often carrying home a 50-pound sack of flour. (Milligan, p. 324).

*May have come later than this, as daughter, Mary, born in 1868 was shown on census records as having been born in Bohemia.

Joseph and Veronica gave each of their five boys a 160-acre farm with a three room house, barn and granary. (Milligan, p 325).

George married Barbara ???. Barbara was born between 1830 and 1850; died in Jul 1920 in Fillmore County, Nebraska; was buried in Bohemian Brethren Cemetery (AKA Cesky Bratri Cemetery), Fillmore County, Nebraska. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

Notes:

The son of Victor KOCA. They sailed from Bremen, Germany aboard the steamship "Ohio" with 454 aliens and 77 citizens aboard. Anna's sister, Katherine SOPR was traveling with them. They headed to Braidwood, Illinois, working in the mines for 17 months before heading farther west to Fillmore. When first in Fillmore, they made their home with Frank KOTAS and Mary BERNASEK. Vaclav purchased the SW 1/4 of Section 11 from the Burlington and Missouri River Railroad Company.

Vaclav married Anna Sopr on 20 Feb 1860 in Bohemia. Anna (daughter of Frank Sopr and Veronika Urban) was born on 18 Jul 1842 in Bohemia; died on 18 Jun 1902 in Ohiowa, Fillmore County, Nebraska; was buried in Bohemian Brethren Cemetery (AKA Cesky Bratri Cemetery), Fillmore County, Nebraska. Vaclav and Anna were determined to give each of their children a farm, so made several additional land purchases. All of this land was still owned by the Koca family as of 1987. (Milligan, p 342).
