    Frank K. Ehlers, 76, of 540 Kaufmann Ave., died at 4:30 o.m. Saturday at the family residence.

    Services will be at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. Mary's Church, with burial in Mount Calvary Cemetery. Friends may call until 9 p.m. Monday at Behr's, where the parish wake service will be held at 7:30 p.m. Monday.

    Mr. Ehlers, who was born in Holy Cross, Iowa, was a retired truck driver. He was lastly employed with the City of Dubuque, and was a member of Truckdrivers Local 421, and St. Mary's Holy Name Society.

    Mr. and Mrs. Ehlers observed their 51st wedding anniversary on May 17, 1983.

    Surviving are his wife, the former Charlotte Kamm; two sons, Jerry F. and Dale J., both of Dubuque; 10 grandchildren and four great-great grandchildren, and a brother, Gerald of Dubuque.

    Frank married Charlotte Loretta Kamm on 17 May 1932 in North Buena Vista, Clayton County, Iowa. Charlotte (daughter of Joseph Kamm and Mary Machalleck) was born on 17 Nov 1913 in North Buena Vista, Clayton County, Iowa; was christened on 9 Jul 1924 in Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, North Buena Vista, Clayton County, Iowa; died on 9 Feb 1997 in Dubuque, Dubuque County, Iowa.     Notes:

    Her application for a Social Security number, date June 5, 1945, shows that she was living at 1005 Rhomberg, Dubuque, Iowa. She was working for Kretz in Dubuque, and using the name Charlotte Lor EHLERS. Her name at birth was shown as Charlotte Lorette KAMM, and her date of birth was listed as November 17, 1913, and it showed she was born in N. Buena Vista, Clayton County, Iowa to Joseph KAMM and Mary MACHELLECK (sic).

    Ken Kamm also supplied this obituary, which ran in the DUBUQUE TELEGRAPH-HERALD of Monday, February 10, 1997:

    Mrs. Frank K. Ehlers, 83, of Luther Manor Nursing Home, formerly of 540 Kaufmann Ave., died at 2:23 a.m. Sunday, Feb. 9, 1997, at Luther Manor.

    Services will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday at St. Mary's Catholic Church, with burial in Mount Calvary Cemetery. Friends may call from 3 to 8 p.m. today at Behr Funeral Home, 1491 Main St., where there will be a wake service at 4 p.m.

    Mrs. Ehlers formerly worked at Bethany Home for a while. She then became a full time wife and homemaker.

    She was born on Nov. 17, 1913 in North Buena Vista, Iowa, daughter of Joseph and Mary (Machalik) Kamm. She married Frank K. Ehlers on May 17, 1932 at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, North Buena Vista.

    She was a member of St. Mary's Parish and was president of the Resident's Council at Luther Manor. Charlotte was known as an avid reader. She enjoyed doing needlework, working crossword puzzles and playing euchre and bingo.

    Charlotte enjoyed being with her family and especially her grandchildre

    Surviving are two sons, Jerome F (Norma) Ehlers and Dale J. Ehlers, both of Dubuque, 10 grandchildren and 26 great-grandchildren.

    She was preceded in death by her husband, Frank K. Ehlers, on September 24, 1983; and an infant great-granddaughter; Frances Ehlers; and an infant sister, Dorothy Kamm.

    A Charlotte L. Ehlers Memorial Fund has been established.

    Notes:

    "The History of Clayton County, Iowa From The Earliest Historical Times Down To The Present," Volume II, (Edited by Realto E. Price), 1916, contains a bio for Henry Kamm. In the bio., Joseph is named as one of 6 children of Henry & Maggie (Bockel) Kamm and the only info. given about him is: "Joseph is employed in the village of North Buena Vista".     His obituary reads:

    JOSEPH KAMM Joseph Kamm, 82, who resided with his daughter, Mrs. Frank (Charlotte) EHLERS at 540 Kaufmann died at 2:30 om Friday at Mercy Hospital.

    Friends may call after 11 am Sunday at Behr's. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at Behr's. The Rev. Anthony Sigwarth will officiate. Burial will be in Mt. Calvary Cemetery.

    Mr. Kamm was born at North Buena Vista, Ia. son of Henry and Mary Buckle KAMM and lived in Dubuque since 1947. He was a retired Milwaukee Road section employee.

    In 1913, he married Mary MACHELLECK. She died in 1947.

    Her marriage license to Joe Kamm shows her to be the daughter of Peter Machalleck and Anna Fesky?. Perhaps she was Peter's daughter and Amelia Jesse's step-daughter?

    Her obituary as published in the Dubuque TELEGRAPH-HERALD, reads as follows:

    Mrs. Joseph Kamm

    Mrs. Joseph (Mary) KAMM, 66, of North Buena Vista, died at 6 p.m. Friday at Mercy Hospital after an illness of three days.

    The funeral will be held Monday morning from the Didesch funeral home to Sacred Heart church, where the funeral mass will be offered at 9 a.m.

    Mrs. Kamm was born in Germany Sept. 20, 1881, and came to the United States 63 years ago. She was formerly a resident of Cassville, Wis., but made her home at North Buena Vista for the past 34 years.

    She was married Jan. 21, 1913, and was a member of the Immaculate Conception church at North Buena Vista.

    Surviving are her husband; a daughter, Mrs. Frank (Charlotte) EHLERS, Dubuque; two grandsons, Jerome and Dale EHLERS; two brothers, George MACHALLECK, Michigan City, Ind, and Joseph MACHALLECK, Niles, Mich; and two sisters, Mrs. Barbara EVERRETT, Niles, Mich., and Mrs. Annie SCHULTZ, Michigan City, Ind.

    Mrs. Kamm was preceded in death by her parents; a daughter, Dorothy, one sister and one brother.

    The Dubuque County, Iowa "Register of Marriages" shows Joe Kamm, age 33 and white, of North Buena Vista, Iowa, married Mary Machalleck of Michigan City, Indiana, age 29 and white. The register indicated that Mary was born in Germany, and that this was her first marriage. It listed her parents as Peter Machalleck and ANNA FESKY (???). The witnesses to the wedding were Dora and Henry Voels, and the ceremony was performed by John Glab, J.P. The couple was married in Dubuque, Iowa on January 21, 1913.

    Peter MACHALLECK, formerly a resident of Cassville, died at the Grant county asylum August 21, after a week's illness. Deceased's wife and daughters Mary, Ann and Barbara, and sons Joe and George live at Michigan City, Ind. One daughter, Mrs. Claude Dietrich lives in Cassville; she and her husband and Mrs. Alfred Dietrich and Miss Millie Bossert went to Lancaster Thursday to attend the funeral held that afternoon.     According to Augusta Jesse Buchholz, Amelia married a Macholic (sic). Jo Peck indicates that they lived in Cassville, Wisconsin. Sandra Everett Sauceda, Amelia's great granddaughter, writes that "every MACHALLECK in this country is desended from them . The only member of my immediate family left that I could ask questions of married into the family and doesn't have any answers either. She did remember visiting the Bossert's in Wisconsin however."     At the time of the 1920 census, Amelia was living with her daughter and son-in-law, Augusta and Claude Dietrich.

    Sandra also provided the following obituary that was published in the Michigan City (Indiana) News-Dispatch on January 17, 1930:

    Mrs. Amelia Machalleck, 1121 Cedar Street, passed away at 11 o'clock Saturday morning, following a few hours illness. Death was due to apoplexy. She was born in Wisconsin (sic) on June 10, 1852, and had lived in Michigan City for many years. Her husband died several years ago. She is survived by two sons, Joseph Machalleck, Niles, Mich., and George of this city and four daughters, Mrs. Joseph Kamm, Buena Vista, Ia., Mrs. Claude Dietrich and Mrs. Harry Schultz, this city and Mrs. Barbara Everett, Niles, Mich., and eight grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 2 o'clock Tuesday afternoon in the home of Mr. and Mrs. Claude Dietrich, 119 East Ninth street with the Rev. Lawrence Weber officiating. Interment will be in Greenwood Cemetery. Friends may view the body any time up to the hour of the service.
