    Notes:

The following article appeared in The SAN AUGUSTINE TRIBUNE:

    Abbie Stewart Observes 100th Birthday

November 15, 1998 Abbie Bragg Stewart had her 100th birthday with a party at Twin Lakes Care Center. Her children and grandchildren hosted the party at 2 pm on Sunday afternoon. Relatives and friends attended.

Abbie was born November 16, 1898 in Sabine County at Isla, Texas (Milam now). She is the daughter of the late David Benjamin and Naomi Dorsey Bragg, granddaughter of the late Frank and Tabitha Halbert Dorsey, and the great granddaughter of the late Joel and Emaline Grindle Halbert from Mila

Abbie and her siblings grew up just off the Carter Ferry road in the Sabine river bottom, or Bragg Community. Her parents were farmers and raised cattle. She and her brothers and sisters went to school at Ross Springs school, which was approximately 3 miles through the woods from their home. They walked there and back each day, having to cross the Patroon Creek on a log. She attained the highest level of education taught at the school which was the tenth grade.

Abbie has one living brother, Edward of Center, Texas. Her other siblings were William Herman Jr., Carson, Sallie (Sanders), Anna Belle (Brown), Leona (Waller-Boyette) and Bessie Mae (Jones) and two brothers that died in early childhood.

Abbie and her family attended Bethel Church near Moss Springs school and there she met Thomas Grady Stewart. (This was later called the New Hope Church). After he returned from World War I the were married January 26, 1919. They lived in Hemphill about three year and then moved back on Dave Bragg's place, and later bought a home from Tom Bragg on the Carter's Ferry road. They remained there, farmed, and raised cattle. After Grady died in 1975, Abbie remained there until she was approximately 90 years old and then moved to the Twin Lake where she is living today.

To Grady and Abbie's union was born James Dalton, Doris Aileen (Waits), and David Gerald. Dalton and Gerald reside in San Augustine and Doris in Tyler.

Abbie has seven grandchildren, David Waits, Linda Jean Lyons, Judy Hodges, and Janice McCoy, Timothy, Bradley and Roger Stewart. She has ten great-grandchildren and four great-great grandchildren.

Abbie is Baptist and was active in the church, and played music for the church until she was approximately 88 years old. Beside being a homemaker, she loved to garden and flower garden. Back in the 30's and forties she loved her radio programs, Our Gal Sunday and Helen Trent. If she could not listen to the stories she would see that someone did and at lunch the story was told to the rest of the family, and every one kept up. Her hobbies were reading, tatting, crocheting, quilting, and sewing. She would read her Bible, and what ever else was available. At night during her children's high school years she would sit by the fireplace, and read the Literature assignments to them by the light of the fire and a kerosene lamp. She also read the Bible and Sunday School lesson to them.

There have been good times and bad times but Abbie was always there and willing to help.

    Happy Birthday Abbie!!

In the January 27, 2000 issue of the SAN AUGUSTINE TRIBUNE, another article featuring Abbie Bragg Stewart appeared, containing much of the same information as the article written in honor of her 100 birthday in November, 1998.

The subsequent article noted that she had 12 great-grandchildren and 7 great-great-grandchildren.

Her obituary was published in the SAN AUGUSTINE TRIBUNE on 9 May 2002. She died at the Twin Lakes Care Center in San Augustine, where her son James Dalton Stewart was also residing. At the time of her death, she had 12 great-grandchildren and 9 great-great-grandchildren.

Benjamin married Tibatha Emeline Halbert. Tibatha (daughter of Joel Halbert and Emeline Grindle) was born on 17 Dec 1852 in Texas; died on 12 Jan 1926 in Milam, Sabine County, Texas; was buried in New Hope Cemetery, Milam, Sabine County, Texas. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  4. 15.  Tibatha Emeline Halbert was born on 17 Dec 1852 in Texas (daughter of Joel Halbert and Emeline Grindle); died on 12 Jan 1926 in Milam, Sabine County, Texas; was buried in New Hope Cemetery, Milam, Sabine County, Texas.

    Notes:

Although the transcription of the New Hope Cemetery shows her as Tibatha Dorsey, it appears that after Frank Dorsey died in 1886, she remarried Stephen JONES, probably around 1889, as the 1900 census shows they had been married 11 years. Three of her children by Frank Dorsey are listed as JONES in 1900. Since all were born prior to 1889, and since other records show Dosie and William J. had the last name of Dorsey, it is assumed this is in error. In 1910, the widowed Tibatha Jones is living between son Will Dorsey (shown as Will Jones in 1900) and daughter Rosa Dorsey Chambers.

The 1910 census shows her as the mother of nine children in total, 7 born to Frank Dorsey and 2 born in Stephen Jones. Two of these children had predeceased her.

Virgie Speights wrote that she owned a loom on which cloth was woven for skirts, trousers and dresses, and beautiful blankets and coverlets.
