    The C.W. Barrett family lived in Stephenville in the early 1900's. A son, Lilburn R. Barrett, went to Montana with a herd of sheep and there met Georgia Z. Brodock. Within six months, on Nov. 3, 1909, the couple was married and on their way to Stephenville. On Jan. 3, 1910, Lilburn and Georgia arrived in Spur, Dickens Co. by train. Lilburn, a tinsmith by trade, set up a business and specialized in lining caskets. The L. R. Barrett family was one of the oldest families playing a part in the building of Spur and Dickens County. Lilburn and Georgia had six sons and five grew to adulthood, Horton, C.W. Clinton, Norton and Billy Ray. L. R., Jr. died when he was 18 months old. Norton Barrett was born Nov. 22, 1919 in Spur. He graduated from Spur High School in May, 1938. After graduation, he took a job as bookkeeper for Musser Lumber company in spur. Later he was transferred to Abilene. In 1944 Norton moved back to Spur and went to work for Bryant Link Company. He was attracted to a young schoolteacher, Margaret May Weaver, who taught in Spur school system. They were married June 14, 1946. They have one son, Robert Norton. In 1954, Norton, Margaret and Robert moved to Crosbyton where he became manager of Carter Implement Co. In 1955,when Guy Denton retired as City Secretary of Crosbyton, Norton felt the job opportunity would be an advancement for him so he applied for the position. The City Council felt Norton was qualified for the job and appointed him to fill the position. having an avid interest in municipal business, Norton attended numerous seminars at North Texas State University at Denton. In 1973, he became a certified City Secretary as set out by the Association of City Clerks and Secretaries in the State of Texas. He was in the first group of Texans to receive this certification. Norton is past president of the Crosbyton Lions Club, past president of Methodist Men, chief of the Crosbyton Fire Department for the past six years, ex-officio member of Crosbyton Chamber of Commerce, ex-officeio member of Crosby County Pioneer Memorial board (museum and community center), member of the board of Crosbyton Industrial Foundation, member of South Plains Association of Tax Assessors and collectors. Norton was chosen as Crosbyton Citizen of the Year in 1962. In 1959 Norton received the Municipal Advisory Council Achievement Award for Outstanding Financial Administration. In 1962 he served as president of South Plains Association of City Clerks and Secretaries. In 1968 he served as president of Association of City Clerks and Secretaries of the State of Texas. In 1970 he was recognized by International Institute of Municipal Clerks and Secretaries as "International City Secretary of the Year". In 1971 he received International City Secretary Certification. In 1972, Teas Association of City Clerks and Secretaries honored him as "Texas City Secretary of the Year." Norton presently serves as representative of Association of City Clerks and Secretaries to Texas Municipal League Board and is active in the Municipal Finance Officer's Association and Tax Assessor-Collectors of Texas. Norton has spent much time outside office hours in exploring and planning ways and means to improve Crosbyton's image. His goal has been to make Crosbyton a place in which people will be proud to live and to which industries and visitors will be attracted. Norton believes in Crosbyton and works for the good of the town.

  1. 6.  Walter Robert Weaver was born on 19 Jan 1897; died on 28 Sep 1965 in Crosby County, Texas.

    September 30, 1965 (unknown newspaper) W.R. Weaver Services to be held today at Spur Church of Christ Funeral services will be held today at 2:30 in the Spur Church of Christ for W.R. (Bob) Weaver, 68. Holland Boring, minister, will officiate. Mr. Weaver died Tuesday morning in a Crosbyton hospital. He had been ill about two months. Retired at the time of his death, Mr. Weaver had been an employee of West Texas Utilities Co. for 34 years. He served 33 years as manager at the local office in Spur. A member of the Church of Christ, he was also active in Boy Scout work and was also a member of the American Legion, VFW, and Rotary Club. He retired as manager of WTU in 1962. Survivors include his wife, one son, Bob, Dallas; two daughters, Mrs. Norton (Margaret) Barrett, Crosbyton and Mrs. Edd Brannon, Scottsdale, AZ, and six grandchildren. Pallbearers will be Bill Schmidt, Marshall Powell, Neal Chastain, Guy Goen, E.S. Lee, Cleston Pritchett, R.C. Lane and W.D. Blair. Burial will be in the Spur Cemetery.

    Walter married Johnnie Geneva McMinn on 24 Aug 1920 in Ada, Pontotoc County, Oklahoma. Johnnie (daughter of John Oliver McMinn and Susan Marguerite Trawick) was born on 31 Aug 1900 in Alma, Stephens County, Oklahoma; died on 5 Apr 1995 in Crosbyton, Crosby County, Texas; was buried in Spur Memorial Cemetery, Spur, Dickens County, Texas.     Notes:

    Mrs. Weaver was a schoolteacher and very active in the church work. Her daughter, Margaret Weaver was also a teacher. I understand that Margaret still lives in Crosbyton, Texas. (July 2000) Johnnie was of average height and weight and dark brown hair and she wore her hair short, a very neat person. She knew her bible. She had a business-like attitude and was a very helpful person, very pleasant to be around. This information was given by 91 year old Velma Roberts who had known Johnnie since the 30's.     The Texas Spur, April 13,1995 WEAVER, Johnnie McMinn Services for Johnnie McMinn Weaver, 94, of Spur were held at 2 p.m. Saturday, April 8, 1995, in Highway 70 Church of Christ with Eric Swenson officiating.Burial was in Spur Memorial Cemetery under direction of Campbell Funeral Home. She died at 3:14 p.m., Wednesday, April 5, 1995, in Crosbyton Care Center. She was born Aug. 31, 1900, in Alma, OK. She married Walter Robert "Bob" Weaver on Aug. 24, 1920, in Ada, OK. He died Sept. 28, 1965. In earlier years, Mrs. Weaver was active in Federated and Garden Clubs and she served as president of Fourteenth District Parent-Teacher Association. For 25 years she was Area Supervisor with the State Department of Public Welfare, serving from 15 to 20 counties from the Spur headquarters. She retired in 1963. Later she was appointed Consumer Representative for Dickens County to the South Plains Health Systems where she served as vice-chairman of the Board and Executive Committee. She was elected as one of two Texas representatives to the American Health Planning Association headquartered in Washington, D.C. She was a charter member of Gamma Eta Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma. She was an active member of the Spur Church of Christ. She has lived in Spur since 1933 and had been in the Crosbyton Care Center since July, 1991. Survivors include a son, Bob Weaver of Redlands, CA; two daughters, Margaret Barrett of Crosbyton and Bettye Brannon of Scottsdale, AZ; two brothers, E.R. McMinn of West Covina, CA, and Fred McMinn of Odessa; six grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.

    His Texas Death Certificate listed his parents as Oliver Perry McMinn and Adeline Clark, both born in Tennessee.

    Ex-Teacher, Editor Dies At Merkel

    MERKEL, Sept. 26. (RNS)--John Oliver McMinn, 88, retired Merkel farmer who formerly taught school in Oklahoma Indian Territory, died at his home here at 10:10 a.m. Tuesday. Funeral will be held in the Merkel Church of Christ at 2 p.m. Thursday with Minister R. L. Roberts officiating. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery, under direction of Starbuck Funeral Home. Mr. McMinn was born Nov. 11, 1861 in Tennessee. When young, he moved to Louisiana and later taught school at Douglas. There he married the former Amada Phoebe Bryan. She died in 1893.

    In 1895, Mr. McMinn moved to Indian Territory, where he taught school and edited two newspapers. He was editor of the Konawa Chief of Konawa and the Francis Bulletin of Francis between 1900 and 1908. He was also instrumental in organizing Oklahoma into a state. While in Indian Territory he married the former Susan Marguerite Trawick of Duncan, Okla. She survives.

    He moved his family to Texas in 1924, and engaged in farming in the Merkel vicinity until a few years ago. In addition to the widow, survivors include five sons, Oscar of Pawhuska, Okla., E.R. of El Monte, Calif., Juano of Barnsdall, Okla., and Jack and Fred McMinn of Odessa; and two daughters, Mrs. Ernest Teaff of Merkel and Mrs. W. R. Weaver of Spur. Thirteen grandchildren and five great-grandchildren also survive.

    Merkel (RNS) --Mrs. Susan Margaret McMinn, 83, of Merkel died at 3:45 a.m. Thursday in Sadler Clinic-Hospital following a short illness. Services will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday in Merkel Church of Christ with E. M. Borden officiating. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery under direction of Starbuck Funeral Home. Mrs. McMinn was born at Decatur, April 28, 1879. She married J.O. McMinn June 16, 1897 in Alma, Okla. A newspaperman in Oklahoma before moving here in 1924, he farmed here until his death in 1950. Mrs. McMinn was a long-time member of the Church of Christ. Surviving are five sons, Leon of Stonewall, Okla., E.R. of West Covina, Calif., Juano of Barnsdall, Okla., Jack of Loma Linda, Calif. and Fred of San Angelo; two daughters, Mrs. W. R. Weaver of Spur and Mrs Ernest Teaff of Merkel; 16 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren. Grandsons will be pallbearers. Elders and deacons of Merkel Church of Christ will be honorary pallbearers.
