After living in Milligan, Crete and Lincoln, he and his family moved to Elkins, Arkansas where they raised broilers and cattle. His hobbies included hunting and playing his accordian and singing Czech songs. (Milligan, p 212)

Charles married Pauline F. Soukup on 2 Jul 1923. Pauline (daughter of Frank R. Soukup and Mary Svec) was born on 7 Jul 1902 in Milligan, Fillmore County, Nebraska; died on 20 Jul 1991. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

Notes:

Came to America in 1874 with his parents and three brothers and two sisters. They came directly to Saline County from New York, and settled on a farm three and one half miles north of Crete where they first lived in a Dugout. The Brt family was known as musical. The father played the "dudy," which resembles a bagpipe. Brother Frank played a bass horn and Vaclav played a Czech trumpet. They played for many weddings dances and social gatherings. Notes:

She came to America at age 6. Her family originally settled in Red Oak, Iowa and then moved to a farm near Crete. Her parents died of the flu shortly after her marriage, and she raised her younger brothers and sisters. After her husband's death, she managed their farm for over 20 more years, with the help of her children. She lived in a sod hut, killed the snakes first thing in the morning and had a dog that actually removed cockleburs from her skirt in the evening. (Milligan, p 211).

To this union, nine children were born. Two died in infancy and one at the age of ten. Their names were Henry, Rose and Emily.

In the book HISTORY OF MILLIGAN NEBRASKA 1888-1988 it is noted that

"...moved to Junction City, Oklahoma, where they homesteaded and in 1909 returned to Milligan where they farmed for a number of years. F.R. managed different businesses during his lifetime among them being manager of the Jicha Central Hall and tavern. After Joseph Jica Sr. passed away, R. R. and Edward Janousek managed the place together for sometime. He also worked in the Herman Stastny tavern.

In 1921, he moved from the farm southwest of Milligan and purchased Alois Petracek dry goods and grocery store, which he and his wife managed. Later he sold the store.

After the Farmer's Co-operative Company was organized, F.R. Soukup and his son, Frank, were among some of the employees. At the second annual stockholders meeting, a livestock shippers association was organized and F.R was hired to take charge of this new association. At one time the Farmers Co-op Elevator shipped livestock to market for the owner. F.R. was in charge of the livestock department. F.R. and Edward Cudly also managed the Farmer Co-op at one time."

According to his application for a Social Security Number, Frank was employed by Stastny & Vasina in MIlligan in 1940. His SS-5 also indicated that his Middle Initial, R, was just that. He did not have an actual middle name. SSN 507-18-6921.

Mary (daughter of Vaclav "James" Svec and Marie "Mary" Suda) was born on 10 Mar 1879 in Milligan, Fillmore County, Nebraska; died on 5 Sep 1967 in Crete, Saline County, Nebraska; was buried in Bohemian National Cemetery (Milligan South), Milligan, Fillmore County, Nebraska. "Married at St. Wenceslaus Church in Milligan. They observed their 50th Wedding Anniversary on Thursday, November 24, 1949 in Milligan Auditorium and their 60th at their home November 28, 1959. Their attendants, Joe Soukup Sr of Swanton, Albert Kassik Sr and Mr. and Mrs. Jim Suda, were able to be present for their 50th."
