Carter Strickland, Jr., 87, of Hemphill, Texas passed away at his residence Tuesday, May 1, 2018.

Carter was born April 6, 1931 in Hemphill to Carter Strickland, Sr. and Nora Humble Strickland. He was a United States Army Veteran. He worked as an Operations Manager in the trucking industry.

Carter is survived by his son, Buddy Strickland of Orange, Texas; daughter, Sharon Edgar and husband, George, of Hemphill, Texas; sisters, Frances Ferguson and husband, Nolan, of Hemphill, Texas and Helen Murray of Houston, Texas; grandchildren, Stormy Strickland, Rainy Strickland, Ashley Strickland, Stephanie Wilkerson, Charlie Strickland, Sheila Strickland, Emy Weaver, Jody Broach, and Clay Bell; 19 great grandchildren, six great-great grandchildren, and his loving caretaker, Bea Parrie.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Betty Jean Strickland; daughter, Lisa Jean Strickland; son, Danny Strickland; brothers, Ted Strickland, Frankie Strickland, and Jimmy Hugh Strickland, and sisters, Elnora Fuller and Irene McDaniel.

Visitation will be from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Thursday, May 3, 2018 at Starr Funeral Home, 510 Starr St., Hemphill, Texas.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Friday, May 4, 2018 in Starr Funeral Home Chapel with Bro. Charles Moody officiating.

Burial will follow services in Plainview Cemetery, FM 1 & FM 2024, Pineland, Texas.

BETTY JEAN STRICKLAND Betty Jean STRICKLAND, age 61, of Orange, Texas, died February 27, 2003 at her residence. She was a native of Sexton, and had lived in Orange about 40 years. She was a Parts Clerk for Cowboy Harley in Beaumont, Texas. Funeral services were held Sunday, March 2, at 2:30 p.m. at Starr Funeral Homes in Hemphill. Survivors: husband, Carter STRICKLAND, Jr. of Hemphill; son Carter STRICKLAND, III of Orange, Texas; brothers, Mac POLLEY of Tyler, Grover POLLEY of San Augustine; sister, Lucy BAILEY of Waco; 3 grandchildren all of Orange; other survivors include (stepchildren): Danny STRICKLAND of Hemphill, and Sharon EDGAR of Hemphill.

Notes:

Called Mollie. At the time of the 1900 Sabine County census, her date of birth was instead shown as August 1879, as was that of her brother, Albert, living with Mollie and James in 1900. It appears they were twins. However other records seem to indicate their year of birth as 1882.

At the time of the 1910 Sabine County Census, they had been shown as married for 11 years, and as the mother of six children, all living.

Married:
Carl Evans also lists a daughter "Abbie" who is not shown on the various census listings for the family. Perhaps she died young.

Their double tombstone at Spring Hill Cemetery reads "Dear parents, though we miss you much we know you rest with God."
